Romanian ambassador to the UN, appointed co-chair of Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council reform

President of the General Assembly of the United Nations Peter Thompson has announced today the appointment of the Permanent Representative of Romania to the UN, ambassador Ion Jinga, as co-chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Security Council reform during the 71st UN session (2016-2017), a press statement reads.

It is the very first time a Romanian diplomat is nominated for this position. The second designated co-chair is the Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the UN. The co-chairs of the negotiation process on the Security Council reform are appointed in their personal capacity. The choice does not conform to the principle of geographical distribution through rotation, but is made based on the assessment of their ability to build consensus in the negotiation, the cited source explains.

The decision is taken upon deliberation of the most important UN state actors, as well as of the main country groups actively involved in the process.

The two co-chairs will attempt to identify solutions that allow the advancement of the process. Their mandate lasts until the end of the 71st session of the General Assembly (September 2017). All 193 UN member states will participate in the negotiations.

The most important change in the structure of the Security Council took place in 1965, when the number of non-permanent members increased from 6 to 10.

At present, the Security Council has 15 members: 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent.
